Strategic Political Counsellor for Sub-Saharan Africa

Job Summary
The Senior Political Counsellor is a key role within the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, responsible for providing strategic political advice and analysis to inform the bank's operations in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and analyse political developments in assigned countries, with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa, using a wide range of remote and in-country sources to assess compliance with the bank's Article 1 mandate.
- Prepare political and economic assessments for the Country Diagnostics, Country Strategies, and Country Strategy Updates, which will set the context for the bank's investment and policy engagement.
- Advise the President and Senior Management, as well as the Board of Directors, on political developments in the region and prepare written briefs as needed to steer high-level political and policy dialogue, identify political economy factors affecting the bank's operations, and gauge political and operational risk.
- Liaise with high-level officials in governments and other bodies relevant to the political aspects of the bank's activities, maintain political dialogue, and serve as a focal point for contact with relevant government departments and institutions.
- Maintain links with relevant inter-governmental organisations with a strong interest and presence in the EBRD region.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in a relevant field, such as politics, diplomacy, or international relations, and extensive hands-on experience in a number of SSA countries. They will also have in-depth knowledge of the politics, history, and culture of a significant group of SSA countries, as well as diplomatic experience and sophisticated diplomatic skills for regular contact with high-level national and international officials.
The candidate should also have a good understanding of political economy issues in SSA, be able to operate independently at a senior level in political, diplomatic, and business environments, and have extensive high-level political contacts. Excellent communication and report writing skills in English are also required, as well as strong partnership skills and fluency in the languages spoken in the region.
