About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to join our team as a Senior Strategic Improvement Manager. This is a 12-month fixed-term contract position, working 0.8 FTE.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and influence the development of integrated plans for the delivery of the Commitments theme/priorities, working across NIHR and with external partners.
  • Develop and deliver team/cross-organisational projects or activities that support the Strategic Commitments, ensuring timely delivery and effective monitoring, reporting, and evaluation.
  • Build and maintain targeted stakeholder relationships and networks across and beyond NIHR to ensure engagement and alignment with the Commitments and the work of the team.
  • Collaborate with the Comms and Engagement function and others to develop and implement communications and stakeholder engagement plans, supporting their monitoring and evaluation.
  • Work collaboratively with other team senior managers to establish effective programme management approaches for the implementation of the Commitments.
  • Assist the Chair and lead senior manager in ensuring the Public Partnerships Programme Board has effective governance, including secretariat functions, recruitment, and process improvements.
  • Lead or contribute to the development of high-quality resources, learning materials, and impact stories/case studies.
  • Provide high-quality and timely responses to stakeholder public partnerships enquiries and effective signposting.
  • Lead or facilitate team/project events, workshops, and meetings, representing NIHR and the team at meetings and events, including presentations and deputising for the Deputy Director.
Requirements
  • Degree in health or social sciences or equivalent skills/experience.
  • Experience of managing public or community involvement/engagement, ideally in the health and/or care sector.
  • Strong applied public partnerships knowledge in at least one of the 5 Strategic themes.
  • Experience of leading or delivering improvement goals in an area of work, involving other teams or organisations.
  • Experience of delivering successful stakeholder engagement for a strategy/project/programme.
  • Experience of working with stakeholders at all levels to generate commitment to, and achieve delivery of, shared goals.
  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills, to persuade those outside your management control, and at different levels, to take ownership of work/improve practice/align work/deliver results.
  • Excellent communication skills orally and in writing, including the ability to convey complex material tailored to the needs of different audiences, and to target communications, including for patients and the public.
  • Effective planning/organisational skills to deliver multiple and fluctuating priorities with demanding deadlines.
  • Understanding of and commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, and able to show how you would apply it in this role.
  • Highly IT literate with the ability to competently employ the various functions of Microsoft/Google, including PowerPoint/Slides, Word/Docs, Excel/Sheets, and Outlook/Gmail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive working style.
