Role Description:

As a Substation Design Engineer, you'll work on engineering and construction projects in industrial, transmission/distribution, and renewable sectors. You'll collaborate with senior stakeholders, appreciate complex issues, and apply your expertise to solve them.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design transmission protection systems for voltages up to kV.
  • Review in-house designs and those produced by external contractors.
  • Develop and implement safe design and operation of electrical networks.
  • Advise on design and design change issues.
  • Specialize in electrical fields, with experience and knowledge of other engineering fields.
  • Manage construction and design projects, ensuring competent personnel and sub-contractors.
  • Implement alternative solutions, challenging transmission specifications, policies, and best practices.
  • Deliver projects on time, to quality, and budget.
  • Conduct site visits and surveys as required.
  • Identify, assess, and manage risks to avoid adverse impacts.
  • Adopt the best technical solution.
  • Manage client interfaces, including infrastructure planners, project resources, and system operators.
  • Manage risk and CDM.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Proven technical capability in power system protection design and application.
  • Experience in protection application at transmission voltage levels up to kV, preferably in a transmission utility, consultancy, or manufacturing environment.
  • Preparation of protection and control design deliverables, feasibility studies, reports, programs, and cost estimating.
  • Calculation of relay settings and preparation of logic files.
  • Ability to work with internal and external parties, including equipment suppliers, manufacturers, service providers, and professional bodies.
  • Experience in preparing detailed electrical schematic diagrams for substation protection and control systems.
  • Experience in busbar, feeder, transformer, reactor, circuit breaker fail, DAR protections, and SCADA interface.
  • Knowledge of IEC communication protocols.
  • Experience in preparing single-line diagrams, substation layouts, key line drawings, and cable protection.
  • Good working experience of computer-based packages, such as ASPEN OneLiner and ETAP.
  • National Grid TP Protection and Settings authorization is advantageous.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical or commercial issues to peers or senior managers.
  • Ability to work in and lead cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to develop working relationships quickly and effectively.
  • Experience in writing clear and concise documentation.
