Senior Materials Specialist

Are you an experienced Materials Engineer with expertise in manufacturing, welding, non-destructive testing (NDT), or corrosion? Your role will involve evaluating materials degradation risks and enhancing the longevity of operational nuclear facilities. You will also engage in the development of innovative applications, methodologies, and testing protocols for the manufacturing and welding of next-generation reactors. Collaborating with designers and manufacturers, you will address issues related to materials compatibility and fabrication processes.
In this position, you will support various programs, including those related to the UK Submarine and Nuclear New Build initiatives, as well as numerous renewable energy projects aimed at achieving carbon neutrality. Your ability to manage multiple projects concurrently will be essential, as adaptability is key in this dynamic environment. The consistent element of this role is the intricate nature of the tasks and the opportunity to deliver creative solutions to a variety of challenges for numerous valued clients.
Regardless of the specific energy-related projects you engage with, you will play a vital role in developing engineering solutions to some of the industry's most pressing issues, thereby making a meaningful contribution to the energy and environmental security of the UK and beyond.
Key Responsibilities:
You will collaborate within small to medium-sized multidisciplinary teams. To leverage the collective expertise of the team and our clients, fostering innovative thinking, you will work in a supportive office or site environment for a significant portion of your week. Your commercial awareness will be crucial in delivering tasks across multiple workstreams, ensuring timely, quality, and cost-effective outcomes.
Essential Qualifications:
- A degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Corrosion, or other relevant mechanical engineering disciplines (or equivalent professional experience).
- Proven experience in addressing materials, manufacturing, welding, and corrosion challenges within the nuclear, conventional power, or offshore sectors.
- Experience in producing precise, detailed, and concise technical documentation pertinent to the role (e.g., materials selection reports, fabrication and welding specifications, inspection and quality plans, corrosion/ageing management strategies).
- Ability to engage effectively with existing and prospective clients, working on-site to understand their challenges, objectives, and processes.
- Design for manufacturing utilizing established models, design codes, procedures, and databases, including working with design and construction codes such as ASME, RCC-M, or harmonized EN standards.
- Familiarity with conventional machining, welding, non-destructive testing, and dimensional inspection.
- Understanding of materials performance and ageing mechanisms in nuclear power facilities.
- Knowledge of coolant chemistry and strategies for mitigating oxidation/corrosion in reactor coolants.
- Experience in bid preparation within a safety-critical and heavily regulated environment.
- Chartered status with a relevant professional institution (or nearing application for registration).
