Business Manager Job Description

The Business Manager plays a critical role in supporting the Monument Lab team by overseeing the organization's core business functions. This position provides high-level strategic and tactical support to the Chief Operating Officer, driving the development, implementation, and monitoring of the organization's operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic support to the Chief Operating Officer in developing and implementing operational plans, advancing financial, legal, and compliance, and human resource activities.
  • Support short and long-term operational planning initiatives, identify operational needs and priorities, and conduct industry research as needed.
  • Develop and implement system standards, policies, and best practices to ensure efficient operations.
  • Manage financial policies, processes, and best practices, training staff on financial systems and tools.
  • Liaise with the finance vendor on accounts payable and accounts receivable processes, month-close and quarters processes, and related activities.
  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting processes, assisting with financial grant reporting.
  • Liaise with the CPA firm in support of tax and audit activities.
Legal and Compliance
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with the organization's insurance broker, liaising closely with the legal team.
  • Generate and process contracts, maintain the contract database, and develop templates.
  • Maintain annual nonprofit, tax, corporate, charitable, and related registrations, including BC0-10, SAM-ID/UEI, DUNS, CAGE, WAGE, and state registrations.
  • Ensure organizational compliance with nonprofit policies and annual renewals paperwork, including records retention, conflict of interest, payment authority, depreciation, and capitalization policies.
  • Oversee the organization's insurance policies, reviewing and updating as needed.
Payroll and HRIS Management
  • Run biweekly and monthly payroll, ensuring proper processing of payroll deductions for taxes, benefits, etc.
  • Enter, maintain, and process information in the HRIS/Payroll system, including employee data and compensation information.
Executive Support
  • Provide high-level support to the Chief Operating Officer on special projects as needed.
