Job Title: Executive Director of Commercial Development

The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Executive Director of Commercial Development to lead the business development, contract, and performance functions of the Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, developing, and implementing commercial strategies to support business development and build on Trust growth plans.


Main Responsibilities:



  • Develop and maintain business and market intelligence infrastructures to identify and realise opportunities to develop the Trust's services.
  • Research, identify, evaluate, and recommend new business opportunities; negotiate terms of acquisition; and, where appropriate, oversee implementation.
  • Lead the Trust's response to commercial tender opportunities, ensuring appropriate input from and collaboration with other Trust directorates.
  • Develop and maintain short- and medium-term strategies for business development and income generation at the Trust, using horizon scanning to identify areas of potential service growth and areas at risk from competition.
  • Support Executive Directors in developing business cases for development opportunities, setting out financial, workforce, and other resource requirements, option appraisals, and key risks (and mitigations).

Requirements:



  • Education to degree standard in a management discipline (MBA) or equivalent experience.
  • Commitment to undertaking continuous professional development.
  • Recent and relevant senior-level experience of leading a business development/contracts/performance function of relevant scale and complexity.
  • Knowledge of the NHS planning system, including the means by which resources are allocated and services are commissioned.
  • Proven record of contract negotiation in an NHS or similar setting.

Desirable:



  • Experience of supporting internal staff in developing business cases/proposals.
  • Financially literate with the ability to critically review, challenge, and communicate a range of views on a wide range of complex issues using detailed analysis and detailed financial information and key performance indicators to influence decision making.
  • Experience of managing complex projects to successful conclusion.
  • Significant experience of staff management, including staff development, objectives setting, appraisals, etc.
  • Evidence of leading transformational change, re-design, and service improvement.
  • Experience of leading business discussions with external business partners.
  • Experience of contract negotiations and management around new business activities.
