Job Description

**About the Role**

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our IR Detectors Team at Leonardo. As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will play a key role in designing and developing the next generation of IR Sensors for Space and Defence Sectors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance of Mechanical Engineering solutions throughout the entire Engineering Lifecycle, considering product quality, safety, reliability, and other requirements.
  • Develop and implement mechanical solutions and techniques to advance the next generation of IR Detectors.
  • Support Programme Teams in delivering Product technical solutions for all aspects related to Mechanical Engineering.
  • Design and develop mechanical products and production tools/fixtures in accordance with business and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality products and meet project deadlines.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including design specifications and technical reports.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and advancements in Mechanical Engineering, including new tools, techniques, and technologies.

Requirements

  • Minimum of an upper second-class degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience working in a highly regulated Engineering Industry.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD tools, preferably PTC Creo.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate issues and problems in an effective manner.
  • Knowledge of BS8888 drawing standards and the application of GD&T.
  • Experience with design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/A).
  • Ability to work in a multi-discipline Engineering Team to deliver to schedule, cost, and quality targets.

Desirable Qualifications

  • MEng in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience working in Defence, Space, or Medical Sectors.
  • Knowledge of vacuum assemblies and optical assemblies.
  • Experience in designing electro-mechanical products and designing for harsh environments.
  • Appreciation of Mechanical and Thermal Analysis, including 'first pass' analyses.
  • Industrial experience in tools and fixtures design for small, detailed requirements.
  • Experience in design of vibration test fixtures.
