Job Description

Role Summary:

St Anthony's is a Catholic Preparatory School (IAPS) for boys aged 2.5 – 13. It is Roman Catholic but welcomes boys of other faiths. The majority of boys transfer to leading Independent schools.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Head of Science to join our team at St Anthony's Boys.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Model High Standards: Demonstrate high standards of professional behavior in all aspects of school life, including proactive communication and collaboration with other Faculty Heads to realize the vision of the school as stated in the School Development Plan.
  2. Curriculum Development: Ensure that schemes of work and curriculum plans from Reception to Year 8 are appropriate for an academic preparatory school, including the incorporation of challenge and stretch for the most able and support for those with additional needs.
  3. Assessment and Progress Tracking: Ensure that all assessments are fit for purpose and successfully executed in line with the school's reporting and assessment policy, and be responsible for progress tracking in the Faculty.
  4. Staff Development: Ensure that staff responsible for delivering the curriculum throughout the school are confident in delivering high-quality lessons at all times, including the coordination of resources.
  5. Quality Assurance: Work as part of a wider Middle Management Team, including attendance at Heads of Faculty meetings, and ensure that all activity in the Faculty is quality assured, including conducting three formal termly work scrutinies in the Science Faculty and at least two formal lesson observations per academic year for all staff teaching in the Faculty.
  6. Reporting and Communication: Proofread all reports written in subject areas within the Faculty prior to SLT sign off, and provide developmental feedback to staff.
  7. Enrichment and Cultural Opportunities: Provide enrichment and cultural opportunities for students, pertaining to your Faculty, including out-of-school trips and participation in school enrichment sessions and preparing boys for scholarship examinations.
  8. Professional Development: Be proactive in your own self-development as well as that of those teaching subjects sitting within your Faculty, providing CPD suggestions and opportunities to enhance Teaching and Learning within the Faculty.
  9. Subject Area Expertise: Keep up to date with developments in subject area and education in general to ensure that best practice is adopted within the Faculty.
  10. Budget Management: Monitor the Faculty budget, including accounting for expenditure and the impact of this on learning.
The Ideal Candidate:
  1. Long-term Vision: A long-term vision for developing the Science provision at St. Anthony's School from Reception to Year 8.
  2. Curriculum Implementation: The ability to implement a robust and engaging curriculum from Reception to Year 8.
  3. Curriculum Change: A track record in implementing curriculum changes in order to improve student outcomes.
  4. Staff Development: Evidence of a commitment to providing continuous subject-related professional development to staff delivering Science.
  5. Monitoring and Evaluation: Experience of monitoring Science provision through work samples, lesson observations, and departmental moderation exercises.
  6. Leadership Experience: Experience as a Head of Science.
