Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a nurse with dermatology experience to join our team as a Band 7 Nurse Specialist delivering high-quality service to patients in Norfolk and Waveney.

Candidates can expect to undertake nurse-led clinics, minor surgical procedures, and leadership of nurses within the team alongside the Advanced Dermatology Nurse.

Main Duties of the Job
  • The Dermatology Nurse Specialist will be competent to work in all nurse-led clinics, including minor skin surgery, cryotherapy, Photodynamic Therapy, skin cancer, isotretinoin, biologics, and other systemic drug therapies.
  • The DNS will provide expert evidence-based advice in relation to the care of people with dermatological conditions.
  • To coordinate service provision, providing professional expertise, care, and support to those needing treatment for dermatological conditions and their families.
  • To ensure clinical practice is in line with the 'Dermatology Nursing Competencies: Developing dermatology nurses from novice to expert.'
  • To be an active member of the dermatology team and the wider professional agencies involved in the provision of dermatology services.
  • Key working relationships with all members of the multi-professional team, including the intermediate dermatology nursing team, nursing and medical staff within other specialties, allied health professionals, and support workers.
  • To promote standards of care and practice in line with Trust Policies and Guidelines.
  • To assist in the maintenance and development of systems and strategies to promote and enhance the delivery of care to the patient group.
  • To actively engage in promoting the best standards of clinical care and cost-effective delivery of that care, including medicines management and resource utilization.
  • To provide clinical advice and support for patients, carers, and other healthcare professionals in the treatment and management of dermatological conditions and its complications.
  • To participate in the maintenance and development of local and national service initiatives to provide the highest standards of care in line with accepted best clinical practice and the aims and objectives of the Trust, the local Commissioners, and the wider National Health Service.
  • To initiate and develop personalized care plans to ensure high-quality care specific to dermatological conditions and facilitate the patients in self-management of their long-term condition, understanding of their potentially life-long diagnosis, long-term management of their condition, medication, management of possible complications.
  • If the postholder has a prescribing qualification, this area may include prescribing following appropriate training and assessment.
  • To promote standards of care and practice as identified within Trust policies and local practice guidelines.
  • To maintain accurate and appropriate professional standards of documentation and patient data.
  • To support the Trust and Primary Care professionals in implementing and maintaining the highest possible standards of care as indicated by National Guidance, Frameworks, and Directives.
  • To actively engage in education and the development of training materials and strategies for the ongoing development of clinical staff within the Acute Trust and the Primary Care team.
  • To actively participate in the collection and collation of data for clinical audit and research in relation to the care of people with dermatology in hospital.
  • To identify, assess, and meet the educational and training needs of patients and carers with a dermatological condition.
  • To deliver high-quality education to clinical and support staff on an ad-hoc and formal basis as required.
  • Initiate, participate, and deliver education and training to other healthcare professionals in the hospital to develop their skills in dermatology management.
  • Be involved in the provision of mentorship to student nurses and other healthcare students, including dietetics, podiatrists, doctors, etc.

Prescribing Role

  1. To maintain up-to-date clinical and pharmaceutical knowledge relevant to the specialty.
  2. To work within accepted professional and organisational standards in line with professional codes of conduct and local policy.
  3. To work with the local Medicines Management Team in optimising, where appropriate, drug utilisation and spending according to clinical need and individual patient safety / benefit.
  4. To attend required in-house Continuing Professional Development sessions specific to non-medical prescribing.
  5. Develop and maintain others' awareness of their role within the speciality, the organisation, and local networks and maintain mechanisms for contact and referral.
  6. Develop and maintain partnership working with other practitioners, local and national bodies, and forums.
  7. Establish networks with other specialists at a local, national, and international level, to exchange and enhance knowledge and expertise.

Professional Issues

  1. To comply with current NMC directives and Codes of Conduct.
  2. To ensure clinical practice is in line with the recognised nursing competencies for dermatology nursing at specialist nurse level.
  3. To be familiar with and comply with Trust Policies and Procedures.
  4. To maintain an appropriate level of professional and personal development.
  5. To develop and maintain specialist protocols and policies as requested by the Senior Nurse/Matron/Lead Nurse/Service Manager.
  6. To always comply with all Trust risk management strategies.
  7. To maintain an appropriate standard of continuing professional development.
Person Specification
  • Registered Nurse
  • Qualification related to dermatology or relevant professional experience
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Non-Medical prescriber (or if not achieved must be within 24 months of commencement of post)
Knowledge and Experience
  • A minimum of 5 years post-registration experience
  • Recent experience in dermatology at band 6 level in a dermatology department
  • Can evidence experience of undertaking nurse-led clinics under Consultant Dermatologist supervision
  • Ability to demonstrate a broad clinical knowledge base within dermatology
  • Mentorship or other formal teaching qualification
Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of relevant national standards that inform practice
  • Broad knowledge base within chronic disease management
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with patients on clinical matters
  • Ability to liaise and communicate with the Primary Care team and contribute to their objectives in the care of their dermatology patient
  • Ability to interpret and apply research-based practice
  • Experience of writing protocols, policies, and guidelines
