Lead Sustainability Efforts at Sumus

We are seeking a seasoned professional to spearhead our sustainability initiatives as a Head of ESG and Sustainability. This part-time role, requiring 15-24 hours per week until the end of December, offers the potential for transition into a more full-time position afterward.

In this pivotal role, you will shape Sumus' future as a sustainability leader within the fashion and beauty industries. Your expertise will be instrumental in developing and optimizing our ESG rating system for products and brands, ensuring evaluations are accurate, transparent, and aligned with industry standards.

You will work closely with the CEO, CTO, CMO, Company Strategist, and external partners to refine and expand our methodology for calculating ESG scores across various sustainability metrics. This includes managing data collection, setting benchmarks, and ensuring that brands are thoroughly evaluated on their environmental, social, and governance impacts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and refine Sumus' ESG rating framework, ensuring it remains at the forefront of industry standards and sustainability trends.
  • Oversee the collection, management, and analysis of ESG data across our partner brands, including categories such as environmental impact, social responsibility, and governance practices.
  • Work closely with the product and data teams to enhance the accuracy and scalability of the ESG score calculations for brands and products on our platform.
  • Ensure brands are evaluated across multiple sub-categories, including climate change, energy use, natural resources, waste management, materials, traceability, ethics, and transparency.
  • Collaborate with external auditors and sustainability experts to validate ESG scores and methodologies.
  • Engage with partner brands, helping them improve their ESG performance through data-driven insights, consultation, and ongoing feedback.
  • Stay updated on relevant regulatory frameworks, industry standards, and best practices in sustainability, and incorporate them into the Sumus platform.
  • Work with the business development team to help onboard brands with strong sustainability credentials or assist in improving their existing ESG performance.
  • Provide regular updates to the executive team on ESG trends, risks, and opportunities within the fashion and beauty industries.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience in sustainability and ESG within the fashion, beauty, or related sectors.
  • Understanding of ESG frameworks, scoring systems, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience developing and implementing sustainability frameworks or methodologies to evaluate environmental, social, and governance metrics across industries.
  • Strong understanding of data analysis, especially ESG metrics such as climate change impact, energy efficiency, waste management, labor policies, and governance transparency.
  • Excellent project management skills with experience in cross-functional collaboration across data, product, and business teams.
  • Leadership experience, with a proven track record of managing sustainability projects and initiatives that drive measurable impact.
  • Strong understanding of global sustainability standards and certifications, such as the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative), SASB (Sustainability Accounting Standards Board), and others relevant to the fashion and beauty sectors.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to translate complex sustainability data into actionable insights for internal teams, brands, and external stakeholders.
  • Passionate about sustainability, with a commitment to transforming the fashion and beauty industries through ethical and transparent practices.

Environmental Score:

Improve brand performance on sub-categories such as material sourcing (100%), traceability (100%), waste management (80%), and overall environmental impact.

Social Score:

Elevate scores in sub-categories like community engagement, employee labor conditions, customer practices, and social data transparency.

Overall ESG Score:

Help brands achieve higher ESG scores by addressing gaps in data availability, reporting, and sustainability initiatives.

The compensation package for this role will be paid upon the company's successful seed round closing in December. It will include a combination of cash upon completion of the funding, equity, and a performance-based bonus.
