About the Role
This is a 10 Programmed Activities (PA) post, including on-call duties and Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). The role can be extended to 12 PAs with mutual agreement. The Royal Wolverhampton Hospital offers extensive elective and emergency theatre activity, requiring wide experience in general anaesthesia for various surgical disciplines. Full specialist registration with the GMC and possession of the FRCA (or equivalent) are essential requirements.
Main Responsibilities
The post holder will participate in the general on-call anaesthesia service, covering both New Cross Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital.
About Us
Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust provides clinical services to Cannock Chase Hospital, with seven theatres dedicated to elective orthopaedic surgery. The Directorate supports educational activities within the West Midlands region and welcomes those seeking to develop the next generation of consultants.
Key Responsibilities
- To assist the lead in developing regional anaesthesia services according to the job plan.
- To have the expertise to take lead in decision-making about the suitability of high-risk patients.
- To manage regional anaesthesia services, ensuring they are delivered safely and timely, benefiting both patients and the organisation.
- To lead in developing and showcasing regional anaesthesia modules in line with the RCoA curriculum.
- To provide anaesthetic services according to the job plan and take ongoing responsibility for patients under your care.
- To cooperate with other consultant anaesthetists to cover for annual, study, and professional leave.
- To deputise for absent colleagues, as far as practicably possible.
- To ensure adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in patient care to contact you when necessary.
- To actively engage in planning and delivering developments in the Critical Care Services Directorate for the Trust.
- To develop and maintain special skills and interests appropriate to the agreed overall development of anaesthesia skills.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
CCT in anaesthesia (within 6 months of interview), FRCA or equivalent, and at least 6 months of advanced training in Regional Anaesthesia or equivalent.
Desirable Qualifications
MRCP or equivalent, ALS certification (or equivalent).
Essential Experience
Comprehensive experience in anaesthesia for DGH-type surgical specialties.
Desirable Experience
Comprehensive, recent experience in anaesthesia relevant to the job plan, including advanced airway and regional blocks.
