Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior VFX Artist to lead our VFX team and drive the creative vision for our Total War franchise.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in real-time VFX authoring tools, expert knowledge of 3D packages, and a passion for creating world-class VFX content.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with Art directors to define the art style for VFX.
  2. Create high-quality VFX content for previsualisation, benchmarks, and visual development.
  3. Lead the VFX team, providing guidance and feedback to ensure rich and varied effects and benchmark quality.
  4. Develop the team through training, mentorship, and career development.
  5. Work with the production team to plan and deliver VFX work on schedule and to the highest standards.
  6. Maintain team health and wellbeing, motivating the team to be productive and proactive.
  7. Set art standards with technical teams to ensure performant and consistent VFX across all projects.
  8. Research emerging VFX technology and plan technical improvements to stay competitive.
  9. Collaborate with design, animation, and other teams to ensure VFX is fully integrated in the game experience.
  10. Work with graphics, tools, and other teams to build and maintain an efficient VFX pipeline.
  11. Seek out opportunities to enrich the game with VFX of various types and lighting effects.
  12. Work with external contractors to provide required resources.

Requirements:

Essential:

  1. 5+ years' experience in game development, 3+ shipped titles.
  2. Extensive experience with real-time VFX authoring tools.
  3. Expert knowledge of 3D packages.
  4. Strong knowledge of Photoshop, Substance, and other 2D editing or texturing software.
  5. Ability to create animated textures, simulations, and associated 2D content.
  6. Ability to create meshes, shaders, and materials, and associated content for mesh-based VFX.
  7. Basic animation understanding and skills to implement timing in VFX.
  8. Experience in lighting and image processing.
  9. Understanding of colour theory, visual design, and composition.
  10. Proactive, results-oriented approach with excellent time management skills.
  11. Understanding of VFX performance and experience planning and optimising for various platforms.
  12. Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
  13. Excellent proactive problem-solving skills.
  14. Strong awareness of industry technology trends.
  15. Love of games.

Desirable:

  1. Experience leading a team.
  2. Experience on AAA titles.
  3. Unreal/Unity or other commercial engine experience.
  4. Experience working with contractors or outsourcers.
  5. Experience developing FX for strategy games.
  6. Technical understanding of rendering, lighting, and physics.
  7. Experience profiling and optimising games.
  8. Art or games degree.
  9. Knowledge of Houdini, Embergen, Pflow, thinking particles, tyflow, fumefx, phoenixfd, or any offline rendering FX related tools or workflows.
  10. Knowledge of destruction simulations.
  11. Skills in HLSL or other shader languages.
