The Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust Neighbourhood Mental Health Teams provide care for working age adults who are experiencing severe mental health difficulties. In accord with national plans, we have been operationalising significant changes to our services to improve the mental health of our Leicestershire population, and psychological aspects of support have specifically been developed and expanded. We are seeking a qualified Clinical Associate in Psychology to join our team.
The Neighbourhood Team is multidisciplinary, including Peer Support Workers, Health Care Support Workers, Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists, Psychiatric Nurses, and Occupational Therapists. Teams work closely with Social Services. In the multidisciplinary setting, you will have the opportunity to acquire a range of psychology skills, and do so with the support and supervision of a qualified psychologist in that team. You will also join a psychology team that meets regularly for learning, clinical, and service development discussion, and peer support. There will be internal training to help you to fulfill this role.
A key feature of this role is learning to assess, formulate, and deliver psychological therapy to individuals on a one-to-one basis, as well as evaluating progress. You would also apply formulation skills to support the team to work with those individuals for whom individual therapy is not appropriate.
A key characteristic sought in those who aspire to work in this setting is a desire to learn and apply psychological skills and knowledge to help people with mental health difficulties and who have most likely experienced trauma. A core quality required for this work is the capacity to form good working relationships with people, both staff and service users. To be able to listen, understand, empathise, and communicate. The relationship is central to being able to help. A person in this role needs to have some resilience, to know how to look after themselves, to balance their professional and personal life, and to have the capacity to manage one's own feelings and maintain composure. Exposure to trauma is difficult, and many of our service users pose a risk to themselves or others. You will be supervised and supported in this regard. Ultimately, it is a very rewarding role.
Key Responsibilities
- Be capable of making judgements about the needs of individuals, the identification of potential risks, and the possible requirement for more specialist assessment and treatment
- Be capable of weighing conflicting components pertaining to a complex problem or situation
- Monitor their own effectiveness with each patient and/or the presenting problem, to determine whether consultation or supervision from a colleague is required
- Ensure referral to designated supervisor is promptly made when case complexity falls out with their own range of competency.
- Be capable of monitoring a situation or intervention by some formal means of evaluation, and be able to modify the plan, treatment, or intervention to obtain a better outcome.
- Be capable of balancing the welfare rights of the individual against the duty of care to the wider community where the behaviour of a patient is likely to pose a significant risk to themselves and others
- Participate in the clinical governance activity of the team
