Job Title: Second in English

We are seeking an exceptional educator to join our English department as a Second in English. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and experienced professional to lead and support the development of our English curriculum.

About the Role:

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the Head of English in ensuring that our students achieve academic excellence in English language and literature. This will involve:

  • Leading the development and implementation of the English curriculum, ensuring it is rigorous and relevant to our students' needs.
  • Providing guidance and support to staff teaching English, with a focus on Entry Level Teachers.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the English curriculum, making recommendations for improvement.
  • Leading the department in evaluating and developing teaching and learning practices, including enrichment activities.
  • Acting as a subject mentor for Entry Level Teachers and providing coaching and support to improve their practice.
  • Deputising for the Head of English at meetings and events as required.
  • Staying up-to-date with subject developments and best practices in English education.
Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Writing, monitoring, and revising schemes of work across key stages.
  • Delegating the design of schemes of work to staff and carrying out quality assurance.
  • Leading the staff in evaluating their own planning and that of the department.
  • Leading the staff in ensuring continual development of the curriculum, including enrichment.
  • Leading on the department's Independent Learning policy.
  • Acting as a subject mentor for Entry Level Teachers.
  • Deputising for the Head of English at meetings if required.
  • Keeping up-to-date with subject development.
  • Carrying out quality assurance related to curriculum content, including work sampling and moderation.
  • Modeling outstanding to good practice in quality of teaching and learning.
  • Providing leadership in terms of classroom management and behavior for learning in the classroom and beyond.
  • Demonstrating sound self-evaluation practices.
  • Working collaboratively and cooperatively with Middle Leaders and the Senior Leadership Team in promoting high expectations and standards.
  • Generally and specifically promoting development and improvement in literacy, supporting the Literacy Team in leading whole-school language and literacy policy.
