Job Description

Job Title: English Department Leader

Reports to: Head of English

Responsible for: Curriculum Area for English

Job Purpose: To support the Head of English in ensuring that students succeed in the acquisition and development of English language and literature skills and gain appropriate qualifications in the subject/s in the curriculum area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum Development: Write, monitor, and revise schemes of work across the key stages, delegating design of schemes of work to appropriate staff and carrying out quality assurance on this.
  • Staff Support: Lead the staff in evaluating their own planning and that of the department, ensuring continual development of the curriculum, including enrichment.
  • Subject Mentorship: Act as a subject mentor for Entry Level Teachers (ELTs), providing guidance and support in their professional development.
  • Quality Assurance: Carry out quality assurance related to curriculum content, including work sampling and moderation, and model outstanding to good practice in quality of teaching and learning.
  • Leadership: Provide leadership in terms of classroom management and behavior for learning in the classroom and beyond, demonstrating sound self-evaluation practices.
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively and cooperatively with Middle Leaders and the Senior Leadership Team in promoting high expectations and standards, and generally and specifically promoting development and improvement in literacy, supporting the Literacy Team in leading whole-school language and literacy policy.
