Technical Leadership Manager for Observability Solutions

London, Greater London, United Kingdom Canonical Full time

At Canonical, we are investing in the Grafana logging, monitoring and observability stack to make it easier to deploy and operate on Kubernetes. This is part of a broader initiative to deliver the world's best suite of open source tools with deep integration and automation for leading solutions covering metrics, logging, telemetry, alerting, tracing and profiling.

We aim to make it very simple for distributed systems engineers and devops to build, debug and run complex distributed systems with high confidence and the ability to inspect, correlate and understand their internal dynamics. Our implementation of Kubernetes operators for the Grafana LMA stack is opinionated, resilient and scalable, providing valuable insights out of the box. The user experience is polished and seamless for end-users, while its administrators enjoy smooth, lightweight Day 1 and Day 2 operations.

We are looking for a dedicated technical leadership manager to lead the development of Logging, Monitoring and Alerting elements within our Observability group. As part of this team, you will be responsible for managing a distributed team of engineers and guiding them towards achieving their objectives. You will also be expected to review code produced by other engineers, interact with a vibrant community and represent Canonical at conferences.

This role offers an exciting opportunity for a software engineer passionate about open source software, Linux, Kubernetes and Observability to build a rewarding career working with the best professionals in technology at Canonical.

As a Technical Leadership Manager at Canonical, you must be technically strong, but your main responsibility is to run an effective team and develop your colleagues. You will be expected to help them grow as engineers, do meaningful work, do it outstandingly well, find professional and personal satisfaction, and work well with colleagues and the community. You will collaborate closely with other Engineering Managers, product managers and architects to produce an engineering roadmap with ambitious and achievable goals.

We expect Technical Leadership Managers to be fluent in the programming language, architecture and components used by their team. Code reviews and architectural leadership are part of the job. A commitment to healthy engineering practices, documentation, quality and performance optimisation is essential, along with fair and clear management and a high-performing team.

The estimated salary for this position is between $120,000 and $180,000 per year, depending on location and experience. We offer a distributed work environment with regular team sprints, a personal learning and development budget, annual compensation reviews, recognition rewards, holiday leave, maternity and paternity leave, an Employee Assistance Programme and opportunities to travel and meet colleagues. Location is flexible, but preferably within the EMEA or Americas regions.
