Job Overview

We are looking for a highly skilled Scientific Computing Specialist to join our team at the Met Office, where you will play a key role in enabling the use of machine learning for weather and climate research. As a Scientific Computing Specialist for National Capability, you will contribute to the development of software tools and platforms for efficient, trustworthy machine learning at scale.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in software engineering, data science, and environmental science. You will be responsible for designing and implementing cutting-edge machine learning algorithms for accurate weather forecasting and climate prediction. Our total reward package includes an estimated annual salary of £46,974, which includes £33,794 base pay, 27% Civil Service pension, Recruitment Retention Allowance of £2,200 per annum, and 27.5 days annual leave (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days after 5 years.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement machine learning algorithms for weather and climate research.
  • Work with researchers and experts to understand requirements for platforms and tools for data-driven weather and climate research.
  • Develop, apply, and promote good practices for software engineering for ML projects.
  • Share work and provide support for the Data Science R&D team through internal and external channels.
