Opportunity Summary

We are seeking a talented Scientific Software Engineer to join our team at the Met Office, where you will contribute to the development of data-driven solutions for weather and climate research. As a Scientific Software Engineer, you will work with researchers and experts to design and implement cutting-edge software tools and platforms for efficient, trustworthy machine learning at scale.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in software engineering, data science, and environmental science. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining software tools and platforms for efficient, trustworthy machine learning at scale. Our total reward package includes an estimated annual salary of £46,974, which includes £33,794 base pay, 27% Civil Service pension, Recruitment Retention Allowance of £2,200 per annum, and 27.5 days annual leave (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days after 5 years.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development of machine learning-focused projects in the Data Science R&D team.
  • Work with researchers and experts to understand requirements for platforms and tools for data-driven weather and climate research.
  • Develop, apply, and promote good practices for software engineering for ML projects.
  • Share work and provide support for the Data Science R&D team through internal and external channels.
