Job Summary

The Virginia Department of Health is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Engineer Senior to join our team in the Southeast Virginia Field Office, located in Norfolk. As a key member of our Office of Drinking Water, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and reliability of drinking water for Virginians.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of waterworks to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Provide guidance to waterworks owners and operators to achieve compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Evaluate engineering documents associated with the design and construction of new or expanded waterworks to ensure public health standards are met.
  • Train operators in the operation and maintenance of waterworks.
  • Provide information about drinking water quality to the public.
Requirements
  • Working knowledge and experience in biology, microbiology, chemistry, engineering principles, and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound engineering decisions.
  • Effective communication skills, including written and verbal communication, and the ability to present before groups.
  • Ability to read and interpret law, regulations, policies, and technical documents.
  • Considerable engineering working knowledge pertaining to drinking water.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Virginia Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within 12 months.
