Job Overview

We are seeking a talented materials scientist to join our team as a Senior Research Technologist within the Effluents, Environmental and Decontamination Chemistry team within Waste Management & Decommissioning (WM&D).

The team focuses on R&D and operational plant support services covering the management of liquid effluents, decommissioning, radioactive contaminated land, and surface and geological disposal.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical leadership in experimental programmes relating to simulant materials production through corrosion and decontamination techniques application.
  • Develop and maintain technical links with relevant core science theme leads to support research programmes delivery.
  • Liaise with stakeholders to benefit the team, such as account directors, innovation team, research fellows, and focus area leads.
  • Develop commercial work programmes and collaborative research with academia and partner organisations.
  • Work alongside project/programme managers and customers to ensure work is delivered to time, cost, quality, and safety requirements.
  • Keep abreast of developments in your field and apply them to projects, disseminating information to the wider NNL technical community.
Key Qualifications:
  • PhD in Materials Science.
  • Experienced user of Atom Probe Tomography, including sample preparation and data analysis.
  • Experience in TOF-SIMS data analysis.
  • A proven track record on undertaking research on decontamination programmes, including European projects.
  • An all-round understanding of NNL lab facilities and ability to direct/introduce novel capability to support Decontamination programmes.
  • A good relationship with the Sellafield POCO team and understanding of their POCO programmes for particular plants.
  • An established network of academic collaborators to support NNL's Decontamination programme.
  • Excellent communication skills and proven ability to present technical information to others across all levels.
  • A proven track record in producing high-quality technical reports and/or journal publications.
  • Proven ability to analyse data and act upon findings.

Salary: £60,000 - £80,000 per annum
