Senior Regulatory Lawyer Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Regulatory Lawyer to join our team at Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP. As a key member of our Managed Legal Service, you will play a critical role in advising our clients on regulatory matters related to the water and waste sector.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a subject matter expert on regulatory matters, including water and waste, water fittings, water resources, street works, charges schemes, and drought.
  • Liaise with internal subject matter experts to provide comprehensive advice on environmental permitting, environmental protection, planning, property, competition law, construction, procurement, and commercial matters.
  • Manage your own caseload and report to the client and Head of Legal Service Delivery on the progress of cases handled by the Operations and Regulatory team.
  • Support other team members with their caseload and provide guidance on the conduct of cases.
  • Manage lawyers within the team, offering guidance and regular updates on case progress.
  • Take instructions from clients, gather information, and provide clear and concise legal advice in writing and in meetings.
  • Attend meetings and negotiations as a legal adviser with opposing parties.
  • Identify opportunities to add value and improve internal efficiencies, including process improvements.
  • Contribute to the management of the wider MLS team, MLS operations, and deliverables under the MLS contract with the client.
  • Comply with all service level agreements (SLAs) and KPIs, including accurately recording time and meeting reporting obligations.
  • Allocate new O&R matters submitted through the client instruction portal, in line with relevant SLAs.
  • Draft regulatory documents.
  • Stay up-to-date with relevant legal, legislative, regulatory, and industry developments in the legal specialism.
  • Design and deliver regulatory law training to the client's business and management teams.
  • Undertake continuing professional development (CPD) activities to ensure efficient knowledge transfer across the legal team.

Requirements:

  • Qualified solicitor with at least 8 years' post-qualification experience (PQE) of working within a regulated sector, ideally within the water and sewage sector.
  • Experience of working in an in-house environment and with all levels of seniority within a business would be beneficial.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the legislation, licences, codes of practice, rules, guidance, and case law governing the operational running of a regulated utility company.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a small and busy team.
  • Organized and good at managing time effectively, using appropriate systems and processes.
  • Good relationship builder with strong interpersonal skills and highly team-oriented.
