Job Summary

This role requires a skilled materials scientist to join our team as a Senior Research Technologist within the Effluents, Environmental and Decontamination Chemistry team within Waste Management & Decommissioning (WM&D).

The team conducts R&D and provides operational plant support services covering the management of liquid effluents, decommissioning, management of radioactive contaminated land, and both surface and geological disposal.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Lead experimental programmes focused on simulant materials production through corrosion and decontamination techniques application.
  • Develop and maintain technical connections with core science theme leads to enhance research programmes delivery.
  • Liaise with various stakeholders to benefit the team, including account directors, innovation team, research fellows, and focus area leads.
  • Develop commercial work programmes and collaborate with academia and partner organisations.
  • Work with project/programme managers and customers to ensure work is delivered on time, at budget, meeting quality and safety standards.
  • Stay updated on industry advancements and apply them to projects, sharing knowledge with the wider NNL technical community.
Key Requirements:
  • PhD in Materials Science.
  • Proficient in Atom Probe Tomography, including sample preparation and data analysis.
  • Experience in TOF-SIMS data analysis.
  • A strong track record in undertaking research on decontamination programmes, including European projects.
  • Familiarity with NNL lab facilities and the ability to introduce novel capabilities to support Decontamination programmes.
  • A good working relationship with the Sellafield POCO team and understanding of their POCO programmes for specific plants.
  • An established network of academic collaborators to support NNL's Decontamination programme.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to present technical information effectively.
  • A proven track record in producing high-quality technical reports and/or journal publications.
  • Ability to analyse data and act upon findings.

Salary: £65,000 - £85,000 per annum
