Job Title: Family Services Specialist I – CPS

Job Summary:

The Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Social Services is seeking a Family Services Specialist I – CPS to support staff who respond to referrals alleging child abuse/neglect in Chesterfield County and Colonial Heights. This position requires a strong commitment to the safety of children and a passion for empowering families to make positive changes.

Responsibilities:

• Make home visits to follow-up regarding the safety of children and monitor compliance with staff recommendations.
• Engage and empower families to make positive changes.
• Work with staff who will investigate allegations by asking families personal or difficult questions on how the children are being raised.
• Help customers connect with community resources to receive the services they need.
• Perform other work as required.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in social work or a bachelor's degree in the human services field.
• One year of social work experience or human services experience is preferred.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills to include the ability to interact with a diverse population.
• Strong engagement, assessment, and interviewing skills.
• Assertive and confident – especially when being challenged.
• Strong organization, time management and computer skills.
• Ability to deal effectively with conflict.
• Good personal boundaries.
• Strong team player.
