Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Midwife to join our team as a Specialist Midwife for Diabetes Care. The successful candidate will have a special interest in diabetes management and will be responsible for providing high-quality care to women with diabetes during pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatally.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Communication and Team Working
  • Facilitate effective communication within the multidisciplinary team to promote patient care.
  • Adhere to NMC and local standards for written documentation and storage of records.
  • Deal with positive and negative feedback from women, recognizing the wider implications for the ward, unit, and Trust.
  • Participate in decision-making for women-centred care and development of practice within the ward, unit, and multidisciplinary team.
  • Be an active member of the ward and wider multidisciplinary team, developing confidence in your role and encouraging development of others and contribution to team cohesion.
Clinical Care
  • Support and enable women with diabetes and their families to make informed decisions and choices relating to their treatment and management.
  • Assess, implement, and evaluate care delivered to meet the individual requirements of women with diabetes.
  • Contribute to the plan of care for women with diabetes.
  • Implement plans of care for women with diabetes in conjunction with the woman's named community midwife and multi-professional team.
Personal and Professional Conduct
  • Work within the NMC professional code of conduct at all times and Midwives Code and Standards for Practice.
  • Ensure Trust Policy and Procedure are adhered to, including Health and Safety legislation, administration and storage of drugs, clinical incident reporting, infection control, child protection, and safekeeping of patients' property.
Resource/Change Management
  • Ensure effective management of time and resources.
  • Responsible for coordinating shift on a day-to-day basis.
  • Participate in innovation and implementation of change.
Research/Education
  • Teach/mentor both qualified and unqualified staff, including student nurses/midwives.
  • Complete appropriate documentation for learners when acting in the role of mentor.
  • Assist in the orientation of new staff/Return to Practice midwives and act as a preceptor.
Person Specification

Training and Qualification

  • Registered Midwife.
  • Degree in Midwifery or related subject or evidence of level 3 learning.
  • Evidence of ongoing Education and Development.
  • At least 2 years' experience working as a midwife with an interest in diabetes management in pregnancy.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of care pathway for women with diabetes in pregnancy.

Experience

  • Broad-based midwifery experience.
  • Evidence of multidisciplinary team working.
  • Experience in providing midwifery care to women with diabetes in pregnancy/intrapartum and postnatally.

Communication and Relationship Skills

  • Able to communicate ideas and concepts to staff.
  • Has well-developed facilitation and influencing skills.
  • Able to effectively communicate complex, sensitive, or contentious information using highly developed interpersonal skills to overcome barriers to acceptance.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Counselling skills.
  • Positive and proactive.
  • Self-motivated.

Desirable

  • Comfortable presenting to groups.

Analytical and Judgement Skills

  • Ability to assess, plan, and implement individual core needs.
  • Ability to make complex judgements about clinical issues.

Planning and Organisation Skills

  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Able to prioritise problems and assess associated clinical risk.
