We are seeking a highly skilled Research Associate to contribute to the Landscape Change and Conservation with MapReader (LCCM) project at Lifelancer, a talent-hiring platform connecting professionals in pharma, biotech, health sciences, healthtech, data science, and IT domains.

The successful candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary team to research landscape change from the nineteenth century to today in UK National Parks using computational methods. They will use the MapReader software library to create and analyse datasets of specific features in historical maps shared by the National Library of Scotland, aiming to provide National Parks with information to support planning conservation efforts.

This 0.6 FTE appointment is for a fixed-term of 5 months, starting on 1 November 2024, or as soon as possible after that. The salary for this position is approximately £42,000 - £60,000 per annum, depending on experience, considering the location and industry standards.

The ideal candidate will have a doctorate in History or a related field, such as Geography or Digital Humanities, and expertise in applying machine learning methods to the analysis of historical documents. Experience using standard computer vision and machine learning methods, as well as open-source development and documentation, is desired.

This opportunity offers strong mentorship on future career pathways and funding capture, allowing the Research Associate to gain valuable experience working closely with partners at UK National Parks, the National Library of Scotland, and The Alan Turing Institute in London.
