Environmental History Analyst for Landscape Conservation

We are seeking a highly skilled Environmental History Analyst to join our team at Lifelancer in London, UK. As a Research Associate on the Landscape Change and Conservation with MapReader (LCCM) project, you will contribute to an interdisciplinary team researching landscape change from the nineteenth century to today in UK National Parks.

The successful candidate will have a doctorate in History or a related field and expertise in applying machine learning methods to the analysis of historical documents. Experience using standard computer vision and machine learning methods, as well as open-source development and documentation, is desired. The role offers strong mentorship on future career pathways and funding capture, with opportunities for in-person co-working in London.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development and application of computational methods to explore map content and create datasets for conservation efforts
  • Maintain and document the open-source MapReader software library for experiments
  • Collaborate with historians and data scientists to design and execute experiments
  • Assist in publishing datasets and models resulting from these experiments

About the Project: LCCM brings together an interdisciplinary team to research landscape change in UK National Parks, working specifically with the Peak District and South Downs National Parks. The team uses the MapReader software library to create and analyse datasets of specific features in historical maps shared by the National Library of Scotland. The project aims to provide National Parks with information to support planning conservation efforts, including helping to meet biodiversity and net-zero targets.
