Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant in Cellular Pathology to join our team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a timely and reliable pathology service in Cellular pathology, with a focus on thoracic and breast pathology, including screening programme specimens and cytology specimens.
Main Responsibilities
- Provide a timely and reliable pathology service in Cellular pathology, including areas of practice relating to thoracic and breast pathology, including screening programme specimens and cytology specimens.
- Participate in the provision of the review service, which is part of the tertiary service activity.
- Provide advice and support to other clinical colleagues, to be available to discuss histopathological findings and to contribute to the audit and monitoring of the clinical effectiveness of medical care.
- Participate in multidisciplinary clinical care and maintain a regular programme of surgical multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Cover other consultant colleagues for periods of annual or study leave.
- Actively participate in and contribute to the continuous service improvement culture in the department.
- Work with the Clinical Service Lead in Histopathology and the Pathology CSU Leadership Team and other staff in the delivery of an efficient and effective pathology service in keeping with Lean principles.
- Participate in the effective running of the department, contributing to an equitable share of workload and facilities.
- Maintain a close working relationship with the other consultant histopathologists and the technical and scientific staff within the Department.
- Attend staff meetings and share in the open airing of views for and against any proposals for change and the acceptance of decisions taken following such discussions.
- Support the procedures, standards and initiatives required for laboratory accreditation by UKAS Ltd and inspection by the HTA.
- Participate in Departmental and external audit activity, including audits performed within Regional and National Specialty Networks as well as quality assurance in Histopathology.
- Participate in relevant National Specialist EQA Scheme(s) as appropriate to their area of specialisation and participate in CPD activities to support these areas.
- Participate in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching as indicated in section 4.
- Contribute to the professional supervision and training of medical, scientific and technical staff within the Department, including post-graduate specialist trainees in Cellular Pathology and sub-specialist pathology trainees.
- Undertake research and development work within LTHT, if desired.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- FRCPath or equivalent qualification.
- Full and Specialist registration (and with a license to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC).
- Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Is up to date and fit to practice safely.
Training, Research, Teaching & Audit
- Should have successfully completed a recognised training programme in Cellular Pathology leading to a CCST (or equivalent) or Histopathology leading to a CCT (or equivalent).
- Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
- Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
- Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
Management, Interpersonal Skills & Further Requirements
- Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
- Well organised and skilled in good time management.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrate ability to relate to and work well within a team.
- Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:
- CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR (or) international applicants should comply with the GMC specialty registration process.
Experience
- Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in thoracic and breast pathology.
- Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
