Quantum Error Correction Expert for Trapped-Ion Systems

Oxford, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom Oxford Ionics Full time
Role Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Quantum Error Correction Expert to join our team at Oxford Ionics. As a key member of our quantum computing research group, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our trapped-ion systems by developing and refining QEC strategies.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated scientist with deep expertise in QEC and a track record demonstrating their contributions to the field. You will work closely with experimentalists to integrate lab findings into architectural designs, and effectively communicate updates and insights across interdisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • QEC Research: Develop resource estimates for fault-tolerant quantum algorithms, build models and simulations to inform low-level system requirements, and design experiments to validate QEC methods in small-scale systems.
  • Quantum Architecture: Create and optimise QEC codes for our trapped-ion architecture, providing insights that guide architectural decisions for our next-generation error-corrected systems.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with experimentalists to integrate lab findings into architectural designs, and effectively communicate updates and insights across interdisciplinary teams.
  • Documentation and Communication: Produce technical documents such as architecture white papers and QEC R&D roadmaps, and present research findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need at least 3 years of experience in QEC research, gained in either an academic or industry setting. Strong scientific computing skills and experience in developing and running simulations are essential, as is the ability to collaborate effectively with experimentalists, bridging theoretical insights with practical experimentation.

Familiarity with atomic physics and experience with trapped-ion qubits or similar quantum platforms would be valuable. Additionally, having a background in collaborative software engineering projects, with the ability to contribute to code development and review, will be beneficial. Analytical skills for interpreting experimental data to refine QEC models and approaches are also highly desirable.

Compensation Package

The estimated salary for this position is $140,000 - $160,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. In addition to a competitive salary, we offer a range of benefits, including opportunities to further your career with a world-class team, business stock options, uncapped annual leave, flexible working, private medical and dental insurance for you and your family, and much more.
