Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Critical Care Registered Nurse to join our team at The Christie NHS FT. As a Critical Care Registered Nurse, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care in our critical care unit.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clinical Practice
    • Assess and prioritize the needs of critically ill patients and their families, ensuring the provision of client-centered care that promotes health and well-being.
    • Ensure accurate documentation of patient care in accordance with hospital policies and standards.
    • Develop and maintain effective communication with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
    • Assess educational and informational needs of patients and families, providing up-to-date information to enable them to participate in care planning.
    • Enhance care within the clinical area by utilizing relevant research outcomes when planning and delivering nursing care.
    • Evaluate nursing care and communicate with medical staff regarding patients' changing healthcare needs.
    • Maintain safe practice according to hospital policies and standards.
    • Ensure all prescribed drugs and treatments are administered in accordance with hospital policy.
    • Participate in internal rotation to night duty as required and support other clinical areas within the trust as needed.
    • Prepare patients for safe transfer to other specialist critical care areas and liaise with relevant nursing, medical, and paramedical personnel and relatives.
    • Carry out patient transfers to other specialist critical care areas in the absence of the transfer team.
    • Prepare patients for safe and timely transfer to ward areas.
    • Carry out and facilitate preoperative and critical care follow-up visits.
    • Receive and promote the trust's annual flu vaccine.
  • Managerial Responsibilities
    • Take charge of the unit in the absence of the unit manager, ensuring standards of care and unit management are maintained.
    • In the absence of the unit manager, ensure skill mix is appropriate to clinical needs and keep senior nurse managers/modern matrons aware of pertinent issues in the clinical area.
    • Foster a supportive working environment and maintain staff morale, promoting a culture where staff feel valued and able to reach their potential.
    • Act as a preceptor/mentor to new unit staff and pre- and post-registered nurses.
    • Work with the unit sister to ensure clinical standards of care are achieved and participate in audit of clinical care.
    • Be aware of responsibilities regarding the Health and Safety at Work Act and maintain an environment and culture that improves health, safety, and security.
    • Support the unit manager in initiating and implementing change and promoting professional accountability.
    • Support the unit manager in the recruitment and selection of new staff to the clinical area.
    • Actively participate in clinical risk assessments and ensure correct documentation of clinical incidents in accordance with hospital policy.
    • Lead a team of registered nurses, nurse associates, and healthcare assistants.
  • Education
    • Maintain awareness of current nursing practice and utilize relevant educational opportunities to maintain the highest standards of care.
    • Supervise clinical staff and disseminate knowledge and current developments.
    • Develop oneself and others in areas of practice.
    • Assist and support the unit's practice educator to support and assess those enrolled on the current professional studies in critical care course.
    • Participate in planned programs of appraisal with the unit manager.
    • Facilitate timely PDR completion.
    • Liaise with the school of nursing, participating in the teaching of basic and post-basic learners and training assessments.
    • Ensure own learning and development needs are met.
    • Attend annual updates in fire safety, CPR, moving and handling, radiation protection, and other study days as required by the trust.
    • Actively participate in clinical risk assessments and ensure correct documentation of clinical incidents in accordance with hospital policy.
    • Lead a team of both registered, regulated, and non-registered staff.
  • Professional Development
    • In consultation with the unit manager, agree learning objectives designed to meet the goals of personal and professional development and undergo appropriate programs of study.
    • Gain teaching skills by undertaking a teaching and assessing course and applying the principles in the clinical setting.
    • Work with the practice educator to support and assess those enrolled on the current clinical skills course.
    • Accept responsibility to develop managerial skills within the clinical setting, e.g., planning duty rotas that match needs with available expertise.
    • Contribute to the improvement of services.
    • Contribute to improving quality.
    • Promote equality and value diversity.
