Surgical Cardiac Practitioner (Band 7) - NHS

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Hammersmith Hospital Cardiac Team as a Bank Cardiac Surgical Care Practitioner.

Working closely with the Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Junior Medical Doctors, and the Theatre Multidisciplinary Team, the successful candidate will carry out operative procedures while assisting with all aspects of pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care.

As a Bank Cardiac SCP, working on an ad hoc basis to fill service needs and your availability.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide skilled and consistent assistance in all aspects of elective and emergency adult cardiac and thoracic surgery at Hammersmith Hospital.

The post holder will demonstrate extensive expertise in both conventional and endoscopic conduit harvesting.

  • Harvesting of the long Saphenous vein
  • Harvesting of the short Saphenous vein
  • Harvesting of the Radial artery
  • The relevant closure techniques
  • Different techniques of Haemostasis in Surgical wounds to include insertion of drains where relevant, use of diathermy, identifying excessive bleeding, re-exploration for bleeding
  • Opening techniques for sternotomy including use of the sternotomy saw, complications of opening, emergency opening
  • Closure techniques for sternotomy including insertion of drains, closure of relevant tissues, complications
  • The opening and closure techniques for thoracotomy
  • Acting as first and second assistant to the Consultant Surgeon for all cardiac and thoracic cases;

    The post-holder will work closely with the Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeons, junior medical staff, and other surgical care practitioners in developing this role to its full potential. You will be responsible for maintaining quality and standards in cardiothoracic surgical care to the inpatient areas that cardiothoracic services cover. You will be responsible for maintaining a Cardiothoracic Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) led approach to patient care delivery, including carrying out and demonstrating advanced clinical assessment. You will ensure appropriate management of patients in emergency situations such as cardiac arrest, surgical and medical emergencies, in accordance with the Trusts and Resuscitation Council UKs Advanced Life Support procedures. You will take an active role in maintaining audit, research, and the implementation of evidence-based practice.

    The post-holder will work closely with:

    • Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeons and Anaesthetists
    • SpRs, SHOs, and other Trust junior medical staff
    • Clinical Perfusion Scientists
    • Members of surgical care team(s)
    • Members of multidisciplinary team(s)
    • Key members within the Cardiovascular Team
    • Key members within the departments of Cardiothoracic Services
    • Key members within the Pharmacy department
    • Other key members within other departments of the Trust
    • Participants in specific projects, trials, and audits
    • Service Manager(s) and Service Delivery Manager(s)
    • External organisations, including professional bodies (as appropriate)
    Responsibilities:
    • To provide sound surgical support mechanisms for sharing good practice within the clinical setting and Trust-wide.
    • Maintain and promote effective communication, both verbally and in writing, with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and Wards or Departments, including formal presentations of information relating to your service.
    • Effective communication with surgical and multi-disciplinary team and Wards or Departments to provide seamless and effective care management.
    • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, colleagues, and managers, both verbally and in writing.
    • Contribute to the investigation of complaints, accident reports, and untoward incidents within the department/Wards, in line with Trust Policies and procedures, and implement recommendations for action.
    • Network with multi-professional colleagues within and outside the Trust and encourage others to do the same.
    • To be actively involved in the development of Trust policies and procedures relating to your service, providing specialist input, leading their implementation, and reinforcing their use.
    • Propose policy or service changes for own specialist area that may impact other disciplines.
    • Ensure compliance to Trust policies and procedures amongst the surgical and multi-disciplinary team.
    • In partnership with other members of the surgical and multi-disciplinary team, ensure seamless patient care is provided through the development of protocols and pathways, identifying and initiating these as required.
    • Contribute to the development of guidelines, protocols, and projects relating to specialist areas.
    • Participate fully as a team member, sharing knowledge and information and supporting colleagues, including support staff and staff in training, to promote a cohesive team and the achievement of team objectives.
    • In conjunction with line manager, identify, analyse, and discuss cost pressures and financial constraints in a timely manner.
    • Identify clinical risks and ensure that appropriate action is taken, in accordance with the Trust Risk Management Policy, providing expert advice and focusing on the principles of a learning organisation.
    • Maintain data quality standards for ICHIS for department/Ward(s) or similar systems to be implemented in due course.
    • Maintain, update, and develop own personal and professional knowledge and skills, and those of the team, by participating in the Trusts 1:1 process, annual review system, and PDP development.
    • Plan, implement, and evaluate the education programmes of trainee Surgical Care Practitioner(s).
    • Facilitate Junior Doctors training while teaching them specific surgical skills and techniques.
    • To ensure Data Protection regulations are adhered to.
