About the Role

This position is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the future of fusion energy at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE). As a Senior Nuclear Analyst, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-complexity tasks independently or through supervision of a small team.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in radiation transport modelling and inventory calculations, with experience in using codes such as MCNP/OpenMC and FISPACT-II. They will also have a proven track record of working in a technology-driven field and be able to communicate effectively in both technical and non-technical terms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement radiation transport models to support nuclear analysis within the Applied Radiation Technology group.
  • Conduct inventory calculations to ensure accurate and reliable results.
  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers to understand end-user requirements and develop/deliver test facilities.
  • Prepare and review reports and documentation, and present research findings through appropriate meetings and forums.
  • Contribute to improving best practices and quality standards within the team and across the organisation.
  • Work with external collaborators to complement UKAEA's internal capability and access additional expert knowledge.
  • Mentor, coach, and provide technical guidance to staff, students, secondees, and other team members.
  • Promote UKAEA's values and champion a culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Requirements

Essential Requirements:

  • PhD in a STEM-related discipline or similar level of experience in a structured research environment.
  • Multiple years' experience with radiation transport codes and inventory codes.
  • Multiple years' experience working in a technology-driven field.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively in both technical and non-technical terms.
  • Ability to plan and prioritise workload.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Knowledge and experience with nuclear physics.
  • Knowledge and experience with scientific programming and scripting.
  • Knowledge and experience of Linux operating systems, parallel computing, and high-performance computing.
  • Knowledge and experience of magnetic confinement fusion and working in the fusion industry.
