About the Role:
Durham College is seeking a passionate student to support the implementation of our CiCan Campus Living Lab project. This project aims to model a holistic field-to-fork-to-field campus model, focusing on waste management, food literacy, food security, sustainable practices, and community engagement.
The selected candidate will contribute to our dynamic team, working closely with the Weston Centre Field Supervisor, Barrett Centre Partnership Manager, and Farm Manager. Responsibilities include collaborating to create a repository of resources for developing an on-campus circular food economy guided by a Food Hierarchy Model.
This model will strategically manage DC-grown produce, aiming to share resources with other academic institutions to replicate and support the advancement of sustainable development goals.
The role involves overseeing the movement of DC-grown produce and surplus food within Weston Centre operations, ensuring a smooth flow from gardens to kitchens. The successful candidate will identify excess produce or perishable items unsuitable for resale and innovate value-added products for sale or future use in our kitchens.
Additional duties may include data collection, harvesting produce, washing and packing, inventory management, supporting composting programs, tracking, labelling, and distribution.

Requirements:
- Food Handlers certificate is required
- Working and operating in a kitchen environment
- Working with kitchen equipment to include proper sanitation techniques
- Food handling, processing, preparation, and/or quality assurance
- Managing food waste including composting, proper sorting, efficiencies, and sustainability practices
- Inventory management
Working Conditions:
Flexible work hours to include evenings and weekends, approximately 18 hours per week over six months, with an estimated total of 426 hours of work. The role offers a competitive hourly rate of $18.56.
