Highways Operative Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Highways Operative to join our team at Totally Local Company. As a key member of our Highways team, you will play a vital role in maintaining and repairing our infrastructure, ensuring the safety and accessibility of our roads and footways.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Carry out repairs and improvements to built environment infrastructure, including modular paving, kerb installation, bituminous macadam laying, concreting, pipe laying, hard and soft landscaping, and drainage repair.
  • Apply safe methods of working, using personal protective equipment, correct manual handling, and small plant and equipment such as excavators, roller/breakers, compaction equipment, dumpers, and motorized circular saws.
  • Work safely and efficiently, adhering to Health & Safety at Work Act, Road Traffic Act, and safe methods of working.
  • Operate and maintain small plant and equipment, ensuring they are in good working order and properly maintained.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to achieve team goals and objectives, promoting a positive and productive work environment.
Requirements:
  • Demonstrate competency in working on minor civil engineering projects in a built and operational environment.
  • Hold an NVQ Level 2 or above in Construction Operations or be able to work towards gaining the NVQ.
  • Have working knowledge of design specifications and drawings in an operational environment.
  • Be aware of and apply Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations.
  • Hold training and certification in the use of small plant, such as circular cutting devices, small compaction units, pedestrian and sit-on vibrating rollers, and other small plant and equipment.
  • Be customer-focused and effective in team working.
