About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Community Support Officer to join our team at South and Vale District Councils. As a key member of our Refugee Accommodation Programme, you will play a vital role in supporting incoming families in their transition to living independently in settled accommodation.

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide ongoing practical and integration support to families accommodated under the migration schemes.
  • Work closely with the housing needs team and other colleagues to ensure a coordinated package of support is offered to families to settle them into initial short-term and ultimately long-term accommodation.
  • Assist newly arrived individuals in setting up essential services, such as bank accounts, utility bills, and healthcare registration.
  • Offer guidance and support to families as they navigate the application process for additional services, including Job Centre Plus, Universal Credit, and Health and Social Services.
  • Support families in registering with their local GP and dental services.
  • Assist with the completion of applications for schooling and access to training, education, and ESOL opportunities.
  • Work with families to develop Personal Independence Plans for their integration into UK life.
  • Organize and attend community events to provide drop-in advice, host ESOL classes, and offer socialization and peer support opportunities.
  • Support migrant families in settling and integrating into the local community.
  • Facilitate and liaise with specialist services and providers to offer opportunities to resettling families and maximize their support.
  • Attend events and activities to listen to and share with hosts and guests.
About You

We are looking for an individual with a strong personal commitment to delivering support and advice confidently, tactfully, and sensitively. You will have experience of dealing with vulnerable and at times distressed people, as well as effective negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.

You will also have experience of community working, face-to-face contact with customers, and the ability to use IT systems, such as email, word, and excel. Good oral and written communication skills, understanding of confidentiality and GDPR, and a flexible approach are essential.

A full driving license and use of a car insured for business use are also required. You will be able to achieve targets and deadlines, and have strong and clear oral and written skills.

Essential Qualifications
  • 5 GCSEs or equivalent level of experience.
  • Experience of working with refugees or asylum seekers is desirable.
  • High levels of written and speaking skills in Pashto, Dari, or Ukrainian are an advantage.
  • Knowledge of welfare rights and familiarity with the districts are also beneficial.
