Immunology Research Scientist

London, Greater London, United Kingdom University of Bristol Full time
About the Role

The University of Bristol seeks an enthusiastic and highly motivated Research Associate to contribute to a team investigating immunological mechanisms that promote T cell-mediated pathology in immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs). The successful candidate will work closely with academics and industry researchers to explore cytokine mechanisms and altered cellular metabolism associated with pathogenic T helper cell populations that orchestrate tissue damage in inflammatory arthritis.

The project will involve the use of in vivo models of inflammatory arthritis and in vitro T cell assays to test key cytokine and metabolic mechanisms as determinants of T cell-mediated pathology. The Research Associate will be responsible for using their expertise to design and execute experiments, analyze data, and interpret results in the context of the project.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Use in vitro CD4 T cell assays to test metabolic mechanisms that determine T cell pathogenic potential.
  2. Establish models of experimental inflammatory arthritis to determine the role of metabolic pathways in shaping effector T helper cell responses and immune-mediated pathology.
  3. Perform a range of techniques to assess immune responses, including ELISA, flow cytometry, and qPCR.
  4. Perform RNA-sequencing, proteomics, and bioinformatic analysis of cultured and tissue-infiltrating CD4 T cells.
  5. Analyze and interpret data, and discuss results routinely with the research team.
  6. Make a significant intellectual contribution to the project and experimental design.
  7. Maintain a thorough knowledge of the relevant scientific literature and advancements in the field.
  8. Disseminate research findings through writing papers, presenting talks and posters at national/international meetings.
  9. Contribute to public and patient engagement activities.
  10. Work collaboratively as part of a research team, contributing to research student supervision and training.
Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in immunology or a related field, and/or significant research experience working in immunology and with experimental models of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases in mice. Strong candidates will have experience of research involving T cells, investigating immunometabolism, use of immunological techniques, and/or cutting-edge omics approaches.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of conducting and disseminating research, evidenced by publications and presentations in respected journals and conferences. They will also have excellent communication and teamwork skills, and be able to work effectively in a collaborative research environment.
