About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechatronics Control Specialist to join our team at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). As a key member of our Mechatronics Control Section, you will play a vital role in supporting the neutron and muon instruments and experimental equipment that rely on motion systems to conduct experiments at our facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Test, commission, and support motion control equipment using various software control systems and measurement equipment.
  • Plan and execute maintenance activities, including safe methods of work and accurate record-keeping.
  • Assist mechanical teams in building and installing motion control equipment on our instruments.
  • Support the integration of user-provided equipment for experiments.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement of motion control equipment to enhance functionality, reliability, and performance.
  • Represent the section as a Mechatronics Control stakeholder at design reviews.
  • Repair and maintain equipment, including rewiring and reassembly as needed.
  • Provide guidance, support, and mentorship to junior technicians and engineers.
  • Present work at conferences and workshops in the UK and internationally.
Requirements
  • Qualified HNC or above in a relevant engineering discipline or extensive experience in Mechatronics, Robotics, or Controls engineering.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of mechatronic experience in an industrial or scientific setting.
  • Ability to critically analyze systems and diagnose root cause failures.
  • Knowledge of safety systems and working under Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
  • Basic understanding of communication systems and setups for controllers.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
