Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechatronics and Controls Engineer to join our team at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). As a key member of our Mechatronics Control Section, you will play a vital role in supporting the neutron and muon instruments and experimental equipment that rely on motion systems to carry out experiments at our facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Test, commission, and support motion control equipment using various software control systems and measurement equipment.
  • Plan and execute maintenance activities, including safe methods of work, and maintain accurate records.
  • Assist mechanical teams in building and installing motion control equipment on our instruments.
  • Support the integration of user-provided equipment for experiments.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement of motion control equipment to enhance functionality, reliability, and performance.
  • Represent the section as a Mechatronics Control stakeholder at design reviews.
  • Repair and maintain equipment, including rewiring and reassembly as needed.
  • Provide guidance, support, and encouragement to junior staff within the Mechatronics Support section and the wider group.
  • Present work at conferences and workshops in the UK and internationally.
Requirements
  • Hold a qualified HNC or above in a relevant engineering discipline or have extensive experience in a relevant field of Mechatronics, Robotics, or Controls engineering.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of mechatronic experience within an industrial or scientific setting, including machine building, electrical systems, and PLC motion control systems.
  • Ability to critically analyze systems and diagnose root cause failures.
Additional Requirements for Band E Position
  • High-level knowledge of at least two aspects of mechatronics (mechanical, electrical, and software).
  • Experience with IEC structured text and object-oriented programming.
