Special Education Assistant

Job Summary:
Under the direct supervision of a classroom teacher and the guidelines stated in the student's IEP, provide a variety of support duties related to delivering a sound academic program and maintaining a healthy, safe, and supportive school environment for children with special needs.
Responsibilities:
- Implement I.E.P. program and follow specific behavior intervention program requirements for students with disabilities.
- Be willing to be trained in First Aid/CPR and implement nonviolent verbal and physical interventions.
- Help students with getting on and off the school bus.
- Provide playground and lunchroom supervision.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher, principal, or Director of Student Services.
Requirements:
- Associate degree, 60 credits, or Paraprofessional examination.
- Ability to relate and communicate with children, teachers, parents, and other professionals.
- May be required to facilitate medical needs of students.
- People skills sufficient for prolonged and effective contact with students with disabilities.
- Experience with Special Education Students.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear (in a quiet or noisy environment). The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
