Dysphagia Specialist for Children

We are seeking an experienced Dysphagia Specialist to lead a school-based communication and dysphagia service for children with severe learning difficulties. The post holder will work with school staff and the multidisciplinary team to deliver a high-quality service, including providing specialist assessment, diagnosis, and intervention.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will have experience in delivering a range of communication interventions, including Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), and knowledge of pediatric dysphagia equivalent to level C or above of the RCSLT Dysphagia Competencies. They will be responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and intervening in cases of dysphagia, as well as collaborating with parents, schools, and other professionals. This includes contributing to statutory assessments of special educational needs, developing individualized education plans, and providing clinical supervision to junior therapists.
Requirements
To be considered for this role, you must hold a degree or equivalent qualification in Speech and Language Therapy, be registered with the HCPC, and possess a licence to practice. A minimum of 4 years of experience in postgraduate pediatric dysphagia is required, including non-oral feeding experience. You should also have experience in collaborative work with parents and other professionals, multi-disciplinary team working, and training others. Essential skills include advanced knowledge of eating, drinking, and swallowing skills, typical child development milestones, and appropriate assessments and interventions for education. You should also have excellent interpersonal, negotiation, problem-solving, and analytical skills, as well as the ability to maintain prolonged concentration during assessments.
