Role Overview

Key Responsibilities

Patient Advocates collaborate with staff across the organization, influencing and guiding decisions at various levels.

Advocates play a crucial role in fostering relationships among healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers, and the community. They ensure that patient perspectives and needs are prioritized in decision-making processes, representing the voices of patients, caregivers, and families throughout the organization.

Advocates should be eager to enhance their understanding of the challenges faced by the organization and demonstrate a commitment to improving healthcare services. They will be encouraged to think broadly about health and wellness.

Advocates will motivate and support individuals in navigating change, maintaining a focus on enhancing outcomes and experiences for patients and service users.

Opportunities may arise when departments identify potential improvements and seek input from a Patient Advocate to provide constructive feedback or facilitate discussions on advancing ideas. Alternatively, advocates may propose their own suggestions for enhancements, which can be explored collaboratively.

Responsibilities of Patient Advocates

Potential Activities Include:

  • Participating in multidisciplinary team interviews
  • Engaging in policy evaluations
  • Contributing to quality enhancement initiatives
  • Joining steering and working groups
  • Assisting in training programs for overseas nurses
  • Supporting ward accreditation efforts
  • Participating in task and finish groups
  • Reviewing nursing skill mix and levels
  • Involvement in clinical leadership development programs
  • Attending regular meetings, including:
    • Clinical Governance
    • Patient Safety Partnerships
    • Transformation initiatives
    • Digital Improvement projects
    • Collaborative community building efforts

Who Can Become a Patient Advocate?

Individuals interested in this role should be willing to deepen their understanding of healthcare services, think broadly about health and wellness, and be committed to enhancing healthcare delivery. Experience as a patient or caregiver is beneficial.

Candidates must be able to reflect the diverse perspectives of patients and service users, including those with varying conditions and backgrounds. Familiarity with the challenges faced by the local community would be advantageous.

Commitment to attending all sessions of the Patient Advocacy Program is essential. This program is conducted over several weeks, and participants will engage in activities designed to enhance self-awareness and personal development.

While there is no fixed requirement for weekly hours, we ask candidates to specify their availability and confirm their commitment to regular participation in meetings or projects.

Education and Experience Requirements

Essential

  • A solid educational background

  • Relevant experience in customer relations, quality management, or business involvement

  • Familiarity with healthcare systems as a patient or caregiver
