Job Description

Job Title: Sibling Support Worker

Job Type: Full-time

Location: Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice

Job Purpose: To work as part of the Family Support Team delivering pastoral care to the families of babies, children and young people diagnosed with life-limiting illnesses and those who are bereaved, specifically siblings.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To conduct 1:1 support for siblings aged 7-18 in the hospice, community or educational setting as part of a bespoke intervention programme.
  • To provide support for school staff and family members via practical advice, resources and signposting.
  • To deliver peer support groups for those living with a sibling who has a complex, life-limiting illness and those who are bereaved.
  • To liaise with professional agencies as part of the families' support network, advocating for the sibling in multi-agency meetings where necessary.
  • To build on and develop current sibling support services within Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice.
  • To support the Sibling Activity Coordinator at sibling-specific trips and events, when required.

Key Tasks:

  • To participate in hospice service coordination meetings to assess Family Support referrals and those suitable for sibling support.
  • To network with other hospices and organisations to maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in supporting children and young people who are young carers and/or experiencing anticipatory grief or bereavement.
  • To utilise assessment tools to identify the individual needs of each child/young person and create a bespoke package of support.
  • To manage own diary and caseload, including implementing waiting lists where appropriate.
  • To maintain accurate records and confidentiality.
  • To evaluate the service, alongside colleagues within Family Support, to provide data and create reports for a wide range of audiences.
  • To implement high levels of safeguarding awareness at all times.

Communication:

  • To establish and maintain effective communication with current and bereaved families, being respectful towards the individual needs of each family.
  • To establish and maintain effective communication with relevant individuals and groups to support siblings, including key members of the hospice, volunteers, service users, statutory and voluntary organisations, and educational organisations.
  • To understand the importance of, and maintain, the need for confidentiality in all individual and hospice matters.
  • To develop mechanisms to engage with service users, enabling siblings to have a voice, which influences current and future service provision.

Service Development:

  • To work with children and young people and their families to ensure their views, experiences, and opinions are heard.
  • To collaborate with the Head of Family Support and Psychological Therapies Manager to identify gaps in the service and make recommendations regarding service delivery and development.

General:

  • To abide by the Health & Safety at Work Act.
  • To adhere to policy and procedures around safeguarding children and young adults.
  • To respect confidentiality applying to all Hospice areas.

Personal Qualities:

  • Confident and assertive.
  • Adaptable in approach when communicating with children, young people, families, and professionals.
  • Emotionally resilient and capable of handling frequent contact with children and young people with emotional needs.
  • Trustworthy and reliable.
  • Cheerful and positive outlook and attitude.
  • An interest in the charitable sector and able to demonstrate understanding of, and empathy with, the hospice sector.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Level 3 Qualification in a related area, e.g. childcare, health and social care, education, etc.

Experience:

  • Significant and relevant experience of working with children and young people with varying needs and experiences, including SEND.
  • Experience of working with wider multi-disciplinary teams/others.
  • Experience of designing and facilitating group work.
  • Experience of planning and delivering bespoke services to children and young people across a wide age and capability range on a 1:1 basis.

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Knowledge and experience of safeguarding children and vulnerable young adults.
  • Knowledge and experience in using various approaches and/or resources when delivering interventions to encourage emotional wellbeing and positive communication in children and young people.
  • The ability to assess children's emotional and behavioural needs and provide appropriate support.
  • Excellent communication skills and a strong ability to manage the expectations of others.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the complexities of grief in children, young people, and parents.
  • Ability to manage own caseload and time effectively.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (to basic level), and database systems.

Other:

  • Legally entitled to work in this country.
  • Ability to work flexibly over a 7-day week, including occasional weekends, some evenings, and bank holidays, at the hospice and in the community.
  • Full driving licence with access to a reliable vehicle and business insurance cover.
