Job Overview

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a high level of skill and expertise in MRI scanning, including neuro, MSK, and other body scans. They will be responsible for instigating and completing tasks to support or improve patient care and service provision. The role requires close collaboration with Band 7 MRI radiographers.

Main Duties of the Job

The post holder must demonstrate an understanding of the organisational structure and working practices of North Middlesex University Hospital. This will inform the provision of high-quality MR services and the policies relevant to the area.

The post holder needs to have a high degree of personal and professional autonomy, with the ability to make sound clinical judgments and critical decisions regarding patient welfare.

The post holder needs to have a working knowledge and be guided by broad professional/clinical policies and standards, such as those set by the MHRA College and Society of Radiographers, the HCPC, and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence.

The hospital provides specialist services, including HIV, cardiology, blood disorders, diabetes, fertility, sickle cell, and thalassemia. In addition to a full range of cancer diagnosis and treatment services, the Helen Rollason Cancer Support Centre is based on-site and provides services to support cancer patients' wellbeing.

The hospital also provides community services and has a dedicated 0-19 service for children and young people in Enfield, aiming to improve pathways and partnerships with services in the hospital and deliver excellent care for children and families.

Key Responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for:

  • Assessing and clinically authorising referrals to radiology in line with MHRA and Nice Guidelines.
  • Ensuring a MR safety questionnaire is completed for every MR patient before scanning, following up on possible contraindications, and liaising with the team and the patient where an absolute contraindication is found.
  • Expediting the reporting of images where an abnormality that would affect patient management has been detected.
  • Accepting clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients within this specialist field and organising this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and allocation of resources.
  • Liaising promptly with the referrer when clarification regarding the selection of the most clinically appropriate imaging examination is required.
  • Ensuring a high standard of clinical care for patients within the department, including monitoring and ensuring the standard of care delivered by other staff.
  • Providing advice to patients regarding their referral and their hospital attendance, including suitability to enter the field of a super-conductor magnet, Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS), Interpretation services, and freedom of information services.
  • Acting in the patient's best interests in relation to their MR scans.
  • Assessing individual patient's understanding of their MR scan, ensuring valid consent to the procedure is obtained, working within the legal framework for patients who lack the capacity to consent to treatment.
  • Matching the clinical indications presented by the referrer to the most appropriate departmental protocol and acting as a source of advice to others in the request and selection of the most appropriate imaging series.
  • Liaising with appropriate bodies in matters of patient safety, such as the child protection team.
  • Operating advanced software on specialist Radiological equipment, requiring excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Reviewing images (own and others) to ensure that appropriate additional sequences are taken prior to the patient leaving the department, which may involve administering contrast medium where unexpected findings occur.
  • Demonstrating and encouraging reflective practice based on knowledge and skills.
  • Ensuring that images are presented for reporting purposes in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Recognising and acting upon imaging abnormalities detected and those brought for advice, within the appropriate system of work.
  • Being responsible for the care, comfort, and clinical well-being of the patient during their examination.
  • Using evidence-based practice to enhance the MR radiographic service.
  • Minimising manual handling risks from manipulating coils by using safe practices and by manipulating the patient list.
