Job Summary

The Information Commissioner's Office is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Lawyer to join our team. As a key member of our Legal Service, you will provide expert legal advice to support civil regulatory enforcement action under the UK GDPR, DPA 2018, and PECR 2003.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic legal advice on high-priority, complex civil regulatory enforcement matters, including issuing monetary penalties.
  • Effectively manage a caseload of complex civil enforcement matters, adding value to the wider operations and influence of the ICO.
  • Develop and implement strategies to address novel and complex legal issues, staying up-to-date with relevant legislation and ICO policies.
  • Supervise and develop lawyers in the Legal Service, ensuring they are competent and undertaking sufficient development opportunities to maintain their practicing certificate.
  • Identify opportunities and risks to the ICO's operations and reputation, making recommendations for improving legal risk management and regulatory compliance.
  • Engage with colleagues, media, and external stakeholders on important legal issues related to civil enforcement cases.
  • Contribute to the development of colleagues through in-house training and knowledge sharing.
Requirements
  • Qualified to practice as a Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Substantial experience in regulatory enforcement work or complex contentious work, with the ability to quickly develop skills in this area.
  • Experience in information law and/or the ability to quickly develop skills in this area.
  • Excellent legal analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and apply complex legislation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to draft complex legal documents and manage a caseload of complex civil enforcement matters.
