Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust as a key member of the Trust Resilience team. As the Head of Special Operations, you will be responsible for leading, managing, and developing the Special Operations response capabilities, ensuring they meet local, regional, and national requirements.

The successful candidate will provide visible and empowering leadership to operational staff and their supporting management team, as well as building and maintaining effective partnerships with other emergency service partners and the wider health community.

Main Duties of the Job

The Head of Special Operations will be responsible for:

  • Leading the development and implementation of Special Operations policies and procedures
  • Managing a team of specialists, including the MTA Training Manager, CBRNE Manager, MERIT Manager, and Special Operations Clinical Lead
  • Ensuring compliance with national guidance and local policies
  • Developing and maintaining effective relationships with other emergency service partners and the wider health community
  • Providing strategic direction and leadership to the Special Operations team

The North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust provides 24/7 emergency services to those in need of medical treatment and transport. Our highly skilled staff provide life-saving care to patients in the community and transport them to hospital or a place of care if needed.

We also provide non-emergency patient transport services for patients who require transport to and from hospital and are unable to travel unaided due to their medical condition or clinical need.

Alongside other emergency services, we work to ensure the safety of the public and treatment of patients in the event of a major incident.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Master's degree or equivalent qualification
  • Postgraduate diploma in Management Studies or equivalent experience
  • Relevant external training to maintain continuing professional development
  • Holder of National Interagency Liaison Officer (NILO) qualification
  • Qualified to State Registered Paramedic
  • Successful completion of CBRN Provider, Operational and Tactical Command Courses
  • A full UK driving license
  • Registered on the National Blue Light Driving Register
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • High levels of interpersonal skills, including the ability to influence, support, develop, and appraise staff
  • Management, motivation, and team leadership skills
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
