London, Greater London, United Kingdom Octopus Energy Full time

As we continue to expand our presence in the UK and globally, Octopus Energy is seeking an innovative Market Risk Leader. This key leadership role within our Energy Markets team will cover all current and future international supply businesses.

We have ambitious growth plans, and it's crucial that our Risk team works closely with our international businesses to agree on appropriate trading approaches. These approaches should ensure risk is understood and managed as conditions evolve. The ideal candidate will be creative, acting as a facilitator rather than looking to police positions. At Octopus Energy, we hire great people who can thrive in a fast-paced environment and move quickly across a complex business.

You will be directly supported by a small but talented team. Additionally, you will work with a number of developers, engineers, and analysts to build and improve tools.

Somewhat international travel may be required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with our supply entities in all countries to understand market conditions and agree on appropriate risk approaches
  • Develop Group and country-specific Market Risk Policies, consulting local traders and management
  • Design analysis and visualizations that collate country-specific risk positions into a single, clear Group view, with delivery supported by the engineering team
  • Pull together Group view on weather risk and look to originate and execute positions to manage this risk
  • Work closely with local trading management to originate appropriate wholesale deals
  • Explore how asset and consumer flexibility can be used as risk management tools
  • Generate explanatory materials for senior stakeholders, up to and including Octopus Energy Group board
  • The scope covers market risk generated by wholesale gas, power, and certificates

Requirements:

  • Strong numerical ability and understanding of risk
  • Energy market experience beneficial but not essential
  • Basic Python knowledge will be beneficial but not vital
  • Able to operate independently in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple projects
  • Interpersonal skills that enable you to effectively form trusted relationships with business unit management teams, retain the ability to challenge with empathy, and possess excellent communication and listening skills

This is a challenging role that requires strong analytical skills, creativity, and excellent communication abilities. If you're passionate about energy markets and willing to learn, grow, and adapt to new situations, we encourage you to apply.
