Job Title: Associate Director of Learning and Interpretation

Join the Association of Academic Museums & Galleries as we seek an Associate Director of Learning and Interpretation to lead our team in developing and implementing innovative educational programs and exhibitions.

About the Role

The Associate Director of Learning and Interpretation will be responsible for developing and implementing educational programs and exhibitions that promote inquiry and reflection by connecting people to art, ideas, and each other. This role will work closely with the senior leadership team to develop short- and long-range educational, artistic, and engagement goals for the museum.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement educational programs and exhibitions that align with the museum's mission and goals.
  • Lead a team of staff responsible for interdisciplinary teaching, learning, and engagement.
  • Oversee all aspects of academic engagement, public and student programming, K-12 activities, and museum interpretation.
  • Provide leadership and vision for the museum's interpretive plan to create a critical and inclusive lens through which visitors can consider art through multiple perspectives and expanded narratives.
  • Work with colleagues across museum departments to develop new strategies for interpretation that enhance visitor experiences of exhibitions and collections for diverse audiences.
  • Cultivate a culture of openness, curiosity, and empathy and advance the museum's commitments to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • Manage departmental staff in day-to-day operations, including developing and monitoring annual budget.
  • Develop strategic vision for museum programs, including coordination of annual institutional program plan, budget, and contract development.
  • Provide vision for and oversee the development and assessment of interpretive materials for the museum's collections and temporary exhibitions.
  • Serve as an ambassador for the museum to the campus, Five College, local, regional, and alumnae communities and within the national museum education professional network.
  • Provide strategic leadership and manage efforts to assess educational programs and initiatives.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in a relevant field required.
  • Familiarity with the academic environment and ability to work with faculty, students, curatorial, and other museum staff.
  • Understanding of diversity, equity, social justice, accessibility, and inclusion issues, as well as a commitment to working across differences.
  • Demonstrated ability to challenge and change norms and assumptions to create a more inclusive work culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide creative and intellectual oversight and proven managerial capabilities to mentor a team of staff and student workers.
  • Skilled at managing within a compact and nimble organization, with demonstrated ability to project-manage and problem-solve.
