Main Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching Spanish at various levels on a range of undergraduate and/or postgraduate programmes, from A1 to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

They will employ a range of pedagogic methods appropriate to lectures, seminars, and sessions in both face-to-face and online environments, and prepare and disseminate relevant learning and teaching materials, including managing course portals on the University's Virtual Learning Environment.

The Lecturer will also provide effective feedback, support, and guidance to students, work closely with the CASE and Languages team, and coordinate and monitor the organisation, content, and quality of modules, including undertaking the role of module leader.

They will communicate effectively with other members of staff in the School and across the University as appropriate, and participate in the School's administrative processes, including exam boards, programme committees, quality assurance procedures, student recruitment, admissions, and study abroad.

The successful candidate will also be expected to engage in critical reflection on practice as a basis of improving performance, undertake relevant scholarly activity in non-teaching time, and participate in staff development and the sharing of good practice in learning and teaching.

They will contribute to the development of curriculum within the School and participate in validation and periodic reviews.

This role offers the opportunity to be part of an innovative team, playing a significant role in innovating on-campus and/or online teaching at the University of Hertfordshire.

Skills and Experience Required

The successful candidate will have experience of teaching Spanish to advanced level and a sound knowledge and understanding of contemporary Spanish and Hispanic Studies, including culture, politics, sociology, business studies, and tourism.

Native or near-native proficiency in spoken and written Spanish is essential, as is up-to-date knowledge and understanding of best practice in language learning and teaching.

The successful candidate will also have excellent organisational and communication skills, be able to work on their own initiative, and contribute effectively as part of a team.

Experience of teaching to non-specialists in Higher or Further Education would be preferable, and experience of teaching another language to at least intermediate level, or English for Academic Purposes would be preferable to provide flexibility to cover other duties within the team.

Qualifications Required

The Lecturer will hold a Honours degree or equivalent in Spanish and/or Hispanic Studies, or a languages-related subject if a native speaker of Spanish.

They will have attained a teaching qualification or have relevant experience in teaching Languages and be proficient in English.

A Master's degree in a relevant discipline would be preferred, or a Doctorate or evidence of research in a relevant area.

It is also preferable that the Lecturer is an Associate or Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
