Job Responsibilities
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking a dedicated Laborer for the Buckingham Area Headquarters. The successful candidate will engage in various manual labor tasks essential for project execution. Key responsibilities include:
• Conducting flagging operations to ensure safety on work sites.
• Assisting in the establishment of work zones.
• Performing strenuous manual labor, including lifting weights of up to 50 pounds consistently.
• Operating and maintaining both hand and power tools.
• Utilizing light to medium machinery as required.
This position is classified as a wage role, with a limit of 1,500 work hours within a specified twelve-month timeframe. Please note that state benefits are not included.
Positions are deemed essential, which may necessitate working beyond standard hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays during emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications
• Capability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Proficiency in operating and maintaining light and medium machinery utilized in highway upkeep and repair.
• Possession of a valid driver's license.
• Familiarity with highway maintenance tools, materials, techniques, and protocols.
• Competence in handling and maintaining hand-held and power tools.
• Ability to comprehend and follow both oral and written instructions.
Additional Considerations
• Experience in equipment operation and preventive maintenance is advantageous.
• A blend of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Construction, or a related field is preferred.
• Background in emergency operations, including snow removal and storm response, is beneficial.
• Experience in roadway maintenance or construction activities is a plus.
