Job Overview

Position: Principal Engineer – Product Safety Engineering

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate within an Integrated Development Team to design and implement submarine systems and capabilities.
  • Ensure the completion of Product Safety tasks and activities across multiple systems, aligning with project milestones throughout the Engineering Life Cycle Management.
  • Support Hazard Identification and Analysis initiatives.
  • Assist in the preparation or generation of safety documentation.
  • Ensure compliance of the Integrated Development Team with the project Safety Management System.
  • Coordinate with other Integrated Development Teams and the Whole Boat Safety Team.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, with a minimum predicted grade of 2:2.
  • Familiarity with 'Safety and Systems Engineering' principles and the 'Engineering Life Cycle Management' process.
  • Experience in team collaboration and the ability to work independently.
  • Agility in adapting to changing work practices and customer expectations.
  • Self-driven with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Practical experience in Product Safety Engineering within the maritime defense sector is preferred, but experience from other sectors will also be considered.

About the Safety & Environmental Team:

This role offers a unique opportunity to understand submarine operations and the Royal Navy's submarine management. As a Product Safety Engineer, you will work alongside System Engineers to influence the development of submarine systems and capabilities. You will gain insights into the functioning of submarine systems and ensure that system interactions adequately address Product Safety considerations.

The position encompasses all facets of safety management and safety case delivery, including safety requirements capture, hazard identification and analysis, hazard data management, application of the ALARP principle, and the creation and maintenance of safety documentation. This role provides a valuable opportunity to acquire a comprehensive understanding of complex systems, specifically submarines.
