Key Responsibilities

Depending on your expertise in highways law, planning law, or commercial law, you may be appointed as either a Grade 6 or Grade 7 Lawyer.

You will be part of a vibrant team specializing in Commercial, Highways, Planning, and Property law, where you will encounter a variety of legal challenges and opportunities for advancement. As a proficient Lawyer, you will manage your own caseload, focusing primarily on highways, planning, and commercial law issues. Additionally, you will have the chance to support our broader team and cultivate a diverse skill set under the mentorship of seasoned professionals.

In the commercial sector, you will provide essential advisory services concerning contracts, grant agreements, procurement, collaboration agreements with public entities, and intellectual property issues. Your legal acumen will be vital in navigating these complex legal frameworks.

In terms of highways and planning, your advisory work will cover highways and public rights of way agreements, orders, powers, duties, and enforcement under the Highways Act 1980 and related statutes. You will also engage with traffic management orders and powers under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, planning applications, Section 106 agreements, and enforcement under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, along with other matters such as local land charges, commons, village greens, and flood and water management.

Qualifications Required

For the Grade 6 position, you will need:

  • Qualification as a solicitor, barrister, or chartered legal executive (Fellow) with full rights of audience.
  • An honors degree (preferably in law) or substantial experience as a Lawyer.

For the Grade 7 position, you will need:

  • Qualification as a solicitor, barrister, or chartered legal executive (Fellow) with full rights of audience.
  • A minimum of 3 years' post-qualification experience, demonstrating relevant legal skills and expertise in the designated legal areas.
  • An honors degree (preferably in law) or 3+ years of experience as a Lawyer.

For both roles, you will need:

  • A passion for resolving legal challenges with a practical and strategic approach.
  • Strong research, analytical, and communication skills.
  • The ability to manage and process large volumes of documentation and information effectively.
  • Awareness of the political, reputational, and financial factors influencing the council's decision-making.
  • A commitment to bringing your own values, experiences, and insights to enhance the team and contribute to the department's overall development.
